Quote of the Day: Sydney Smith
This quote may make no sense to a non-musician…but it provides an answer to the “Why do you play?” question better than almost any other. See what you think.
“If I were to begin life again, I would devote it to music. It is the only cheap and unpunished rapture upon earth.”
Sydney Smith
While I might disagree with the “cheap” part – although compared to greens fees, music isn’t expensive
– it certainly lifts us to heights in a way that only a fine art can. And yes, whether you play Celtic tunes on an accordion, bluegrass on a banjo, or concerti on a violin, you are participating in a fine art!
When you stop to consider how few people really can play an instrument at any level, you begin to appreciate what you’ve already accomplished…and where you may head in the future. Rapture, indeed.
Keep playing,
Mark
